Dear Families,
The fourth graders continue to work on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills this week. Thank you for sending them to school with healthy snacks and plenty of sleep! We should finish testing tomorrow.
Here’s a look at what else we’re working on in fourth grade…
Reading: The biography projects are fantastic. Last week we hosted an open house and several parents, students, and teachers visited the class to see the projects. If you didn’t have a chance to see them, you are welcome to stop by after school. Please see the project evaluations in today’s blue folder.
We started new literature circles today. Students chose between three books all by Andrew Clements. The books are Frindle, The Landry News, and No Talking. Ask your child which book they are reading and have them show you their assignment page tonight.
Science: Students are finishing their books about the science field trip aboard Adventuress. On Friday we’re hoping to share our books with the sixth grade, who are completing their books about camp. Students will bring these books home at the end of the week, be sure to ask them to read them to you!
Writing: Please see the enclosed order form for the In Twenty Years book. This is the only time you will be able to order the book. The order forms need to be returned to me by Friday, when I will mail the essays to the company to be bound. Even if you do not plan on ordering a book, please return the order form.
Other News:
· There is a noon dismissal on Friday, May 2nd. Students may wear jeans and a St. George t-shirt.
· Salsa Night is Friday, May 2nd
· The Nike 5K fun run, a fundraiser for school physical education programs, is Saturday, May 10th . You can sign up through the school and Nike will give $15 of your $20 registration fee to St. George School! You can also sign up online www.nike5kforkids.com/seattle/
· In preparation for the Nike fun run, there will be a training day on May 4th after Mass. Come “Chase the Chicken” this Sunday!
· There is a field trip to the International Children’s Festival on Friday, May 16th. I will be away that day with Miss Zipp and Mrs. Schroeder. However, Sister Maureen has agreed to take the class. I will need plenty of parent drivers/chaperones for this trip. It will be from 9am to 2:30pm. Sack lunches and uniforms will be required. Please complete the field trip form as soon as possible and let me know if you are available to chaperone.
· We are down to six and a half weeks of school left! Encourage your child to put in their best effort right up to the end of the year!
Sincerely,
Claire Plehal

Dear Families,
We had a great time yesterday out on the Puget Sound. The kids all heeded my warning about bundling up and I didn’t hear one complaint about being cold! We were so lucky with the weather too! It held out until about the last hour, when a shower came in. I was really proud of everyone, they came eager to learn and were fantastic ambassadors for St. George School. I would like to thank Tran Quach, Agnes Vining, Quang Luong, Donna Jacquemart, Sharon Buza, and Madeline’s aunt Brooke for chaperoning the trip.
Here’s a look at what else we’re working on in fourth grade…
Reading: Students are reading biographies and are working on a planning sheet for their project. The planning sheet is due tomorrow and the final project is due Thursday, April 24th. Ask your son or daughter to show you their planning sheet tonight. They should also be reading at least 20 minutes a night at home.
Writing: The final copy of the In Twenty Years writing assignment is due on Friday. This assignment will be made into a book with each child contributing a page of writing and an illustration. I have specific paper for the book, so I am asking students to save their essay on a disk or to email it to me and I will print it.
Religion: The class put on a nice prayer service on Monday focused on the Beatitudes. Tomorrow Michelle, Bennet, and Chelsea will read at Mass. Don’t forget to bring a canned good to school to donate to the food bank!
Science: We are creating individual environmental science books, based on our science textbook work and our science field trip. The students would love to host an open house when we finish. They will share their books and show a slide show of photos from the boat trip. The class open house will be held on Thursday, April 24th at 2:15. I look forward to seeing as many of you here as possible! (This is also the date the biography presentations will be made, they will be done earlier in the day.)
Bake Sale News: Thank you to Agnes Vining and Donna Jacquemart for holding a bake sale at Mass last Sunday and thank you to those who contributed baked goods. $200 was raised to put towards the field trip expenses.
Other News:
· There is no school Friday, April 25th
· The gym dedication is Wednesday, April 30th
· Salsa Night is Friday, May 2nd
· The Nike 5K fun run, a fundraiser for school physical education programs, is Saturday, May 10th . You can sign up through the school and Nike will give $15 of your $20 registration fee to St. George School! See the flyer included in today’s folder.
Sincerely,
Claire Plehal
